Simplified mental representations as a cause of overprecision

چکیده

Abstract Although no consensus on the issue exists yet, some evidence indicates that people are typically overprecise in their inferences. In particular, subjective confidence intervals often too narrow when compared with Bayesian ones. This paper uses a quasi-Bayesian theory and lab experiments to explore overprecision learn about empirical frequency ? of random event. Motivated by literature limited attention, we hypothesize that, there is large number potential values , individuals mentally operate simplified representations objective state space. Their mental models however sophisticated they co-move signals observed, focusing most consistent available. As result, elaborate accurate point estimates but also become confident them, as hardly reflect those would call more into doubt conclusions. this line, subjects our experiment almost exclusively report overly intervals, unbiased (except takes extreme values, i.e., close 0 or 1). Indirect suggests consider 1/5

Multifactorial discrimination as a fundamental cause of mental health inequities

BACKGROUND The theory of fundamental causes explains why health disparities persist over time, even as risk factors, mechanisms, and diseases change. Using an intersectional framework, we evaluated multifactorial discrimination as a fundamental cause of mental health disparities. METHODS Using baseline data from the Project STRIDE: Stress, Identity, and Mental Health study, we examined the he...

Poverty as a cause and consequence of Ill health

Background and aims: Poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon that can be defined in both economic and social terms. The paper attempts to review the existing evidence to understand the relation between poverty and ill health in the context of the limited conceptual and operational definitions of these terms. The paper uses two of Hills criteria- reversibility and dose response relationship to ...

Simplified Representations for Modeling Hair

We present a novel framework for modeling hair using simplified representations. The set of representations, including individual strands, clusters and patches, are derived from Dynamic-NURBS and have the same underlying base skeleton. Our framework supports automatic simplification of dynamic simulation, collision detection and graphical rendering of hair, and offers flexibility to balance bet...
